Stay Protected During Flu Season
September 19, 2024
As flu season approaches, it's more important than ever to take steps to protect yourself and your loved ones. The flu can affect anyone, but certain groups—including young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions—are at higher risk of developing serious complications. At [Your FQHC's Name], we are committed to helping our community stay healthy during this time.
What is the Flu?
The flu (influenza) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to hospitalization. Symptoms often come on suddenly and may include:
- Fever or chills
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Muscle or body aches
- Fatigue
- Headaches
Get Vaccinated
The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine every year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older get vaccinated. Flu vaccines are safe, effective, and help reduce the spread of the virus in our community.
At Centerpoint Health, we offer flu vaccines for all eligible patients. Schedule your appointment today to ensure you're protected before the flu starts spreading in your area.
Other Preventative Measures
In addition to getting vaccinated, there are other ways you can reduce your risk of catching or spreading the flu:
1. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.
2. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
3. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing.
4. Stay home if you're feeling sick to prevent infecting others.
Who is Most at Risk?
While everyone can get the flu, some individuals are at greater risk for complications. These include:
- Older adults (65+ years)
- Pregnant women
- People with chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease)
- Children under the age of 5
Why It’s Important to Act Early
Flu season typically peaks between December and February, but it can start as early as October. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for the body to develop antibodies, so getting your flu shot early is key to staying protected throughout the season.
